Cloud Storage vs. Cloud Backup: What’s the Difference?

They can work together, but they solve different problems.

Sync makes files available. Backup makes recovery possible.

Cloud storage services such as a photo library or shared drive keep current files accessible across devices. When a file is changed or deleted, that change may be reflected everywhere. Backup is a separate recovery copy with retention and version history, designed for a lost device, accidental deletion, ransomware, or an account problem.

A simple setup

  1. Keep working files in the service that makes collaboration easy.
  2. Keep a separate local copy on a drive or NAS.
  3. Use a separate off-site backup with version history.
  4. Restore a small folder before an emergency proves the plan.
Warning: a mirrored drive, RAID, or synchronized folder can spread a bad change. It does not by itself satisfy the off-site backup part of 3–2–1.
