How to Back Up an iPhone or Android Photo Library

Your phone is a camera, a library, and a single point of failure unless you build another copy.

Start before the next upgrade, loss, or broken screen.

First confirm that photo sync or backup is enabled and has completed on Wi‑Fi. Then sign in on another device or the provider’s web interface and open recent photos and videos. That second check matters: a full phone can pause uploads, and a new device is not proof that every original is safe.

Checklist

  1. Confirm the account, available storage, and automatic upload setting.
  2. Keep the phone charging on Wi‑Fi until the initial upload completes.
  3. Open files from a second device and verify original-quality settings.
  4. Export or copy the library periodically to a computer, drive, or NAS.
  5. Keep an independent backup of that master copy.
Practical warning: deleting a photo in a synced library can delete it across devices. Understand the provider’s recently-deleted window and backup version history.
